Abstract:

This guided tour will lead the class through Philadelphia's 9th Street Curbside Market, that was officially established in 1915 and renamed as “The Italian Market” in 2009. We will first learn about the Washington Immigration Station as the entry point for Italian immigrants at the end of the 1800s. We will then explore the legacy of immigrants helping immigrants, with special reference to the Palumbo family setting up newly arrived immigrants in Philadelphia with housing and jobs. In addition, we will address the exclusion of the Italian community from spaces in the neighborhood, and we will discuss the competition and challenges amongst immigrant communities that aroused throughout the time. Finally, we will meet current members of the Italian-American communities and members of non-profit organizations to learn about 2nd and 3rd-generation family-owned businesses, the contributions of women to the market, and projects to protect and preserve the historical identity of this neighborhood.
