Solo Sunny (1979, dir. Konrad Wolf) introduces audiences to pop singer Sunny (played by Renate Krössner), an independent young artist who dreams of recognition in East Berlin’s diverse music scene. She tours villages and neighborhoods around Berlin with her band and performs in clubs and at festivals. Her relationships are much more complex, and she is either used or abused by men who objectify her. The only one who stands by her is her friend and former colleague Christine (Heide Kipp). When an argument with one of her love interests escalates and he insults Sunny on stage, Sunny is kicked out of the band.

The script, co-authored by Konrad Wolf and Wolfgang Kohlhaase, handles Sunny’s humor and heartache with equal care and is brought to life by vivid visuals and a catchy soundtrack. The film was a smash hit in the GDR and was celebrated abroad, as it was entered in the 1980 Berlin International Film Festival (Berlinale) competition. There, it garnered the FIPRESCI Critics' Prize and Krössner was awarded the Silver Bear for Best Actress.
